Michela joined Canvas as a software engineer in July 2017 after graduating from Hackbright Academy, a 12-week intensive software development bootcamp. Previously, she worked at Triage Consulting Group, providing revenue cycle and reimbursement consulting services to hospitals and health systems. Michela’s experience working with inefficient hospital business offices that utilize dated technology inspired her to improve the state of health technology. Michela holds a BS in Mathematics from UCLA, and likes to spend her free time in the outdoors hiking, fishing, hunting, or playing with dogs.
Beau is passionate about writing software that helps people. Prior to Canvas, he helped move science forward at Harvard's Open Humans Foundation and did data science engineering at Practice Fusion. He continues to contribute to open source and is a contributor to nearly 300 projects. Beau lives on a sailboat in the Pacific Northwest and enjoys motorcycle touring, photography, and making music in his free time.
Andrew founded Canvas Medical in 2015 and leads the team. He invented the core technology that enables the company's revolutionary user interface and breakthrough data science. Prior to Canvas, Andrew built one of the largest real-time analytics tools in healthcare at Practice Fusion and led large-scale data science teams in the advertising and travel industries. He holds an MS from the Stanford School of Engineering. His wife, Anna, is a family nurse practitioner at a safety net clinic in San Francisco; her experience with electronic health records inspired him to start Canvas. Andrew enjoys spending time with his wife and son, surfing, and trail running on mountainous terrain.
Julian leads strategy and operations at Canvas. Previously, he led design of the CMS Innovation Center's Accountable Care Organization models and advised teams on topics ranging from MACRA to primary care medical home payment models. Julian joined Canvas after seeing the failures of current technology to meet the demands of increasing medical and regulatory complexity without adding to the risk of clinician burnout. Julian holds a BA and MPH from Yale University, and enjoys travel, hiking, and outdoor sports, preferably in his home state of Montana.
Dr. Nadler is an Internal Medicine physician and leads the Clinical Advisory Board, which guides development of clinical features across all Canvas applications. Dr Nadler has 40 years of experience in the primary care practice setting. He additionally served as the Medical Legal Chief at the Kaiser Permanente Fremont Medical Center and, for nine years ending in 2012, served on the Board of Directors of the The Permanente Medical Group. He earned his MD from the New York University School of Medicine and enjoys running, backpacking, family, and procedural mystery/crime novels with the occasional work of better literature.
Joe leads engineering at Canvas. Prior to Canvas, he led a team of developers for the most trafficked pages at Trulia, a leading real estate search engine. Joe joined Canvas to bring his expertise in creating highly usable and intelligent technology to the challenges faced by clinicians and patients. He holds a BA in Mathematics from Loughborough University and enjoys spending time with his wife and kids, playing guitar, and artisanal coffee.
Mel leads product development at Canvas. Previously, he worked at IDEO as a designer and has founded a variety of companies. Prior to becoming a developer, Mel worked in a wide range of healthcare settings, both in a clinical capacity and in business administration. He brings his product acumen and frontend development expertise to the Canvas team. Mel holds a BS in Neurobiology and Physiology and a BS in Business Management from the University of Maryland. In his free time he enjoys surfing, kiteboarding, hiking and building homes.
Matthew is a software engineer exclusively dedicated to the healthcare industry. He is an established figure in the open source healthcare community, leading international teams to improve healthcare IT in low resource locales. Prior to Canvas, Matthew worked on many projects at UPMC in his hometown of Pittsburgh. Matthew holds a BS in Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh. Now living in Los Angeles, Matthew spends his free time listening to podcasts and watching after his cats.
Dr. Zimmerman is a practicing family physician and Medical Director at Canvas. With deep experience in performance improvement and practice redesign in the small office setting, Dr. Zimmerman has served as expert faculty for the California Academy of Family Physicians, California Medical Association, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Dr. Zimmerman was formerly Chief Medical Officer at Affinity Medical Group, a Northern California IPA, where he led the group to top-tier performance in various value-based programs. Dr. Zimmerman received his M.D. from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and completed training at Ventura County Medical Center Family Practice Residency. He is an alumnus of the UCSF/California Health Care Foundation Health Care Leadership Program. Dr. Zimmerman lives in Oakland with his wife and two children and enjoys cycling, baseball and travel with his family.
